The World Alliance for Efficient Solutions, established by the Solar Impulse Foundation, brings together the main actors involved in developing, financing or promoting products, services, processes and technologies that protect the environment in a profitable way. To this end, the World Alliance will assess the solutions submitted by its Members, with the help of independent technical and financial Experts, and select 1,000 of the most promising ones. They will be labelled as Efficient Solutions and presented to governments, businesses and institutions to encourage them to adopt more ambitious environmental targets and energy policies.

#New battery consortium ESiLib launches initiative to meet Europe’s goals for a green and circular transition
eitrawmaterials.eu 06 April, 2022 - The European consortium ESiLib, co-funded by EIT RawMaterials, has launched an initiative to enhance the circularity and sustainability of lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery anodes to support Europe’s shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). With vehicle electrification projected to require 1 TWh of batteries annually by 2030, ESiLib aims to develop high-energy-density, next-generation batteries. The consortium includes industry leaders like E-magy, Ferroglobe, and SUSTEC, a global supplier of sustainable etching technology tasked with advancing etchant recycling processes. The EUR 3.3 million project emphasizes silicon’s role in battery anodes, aiming to establish closed material loops and strengthen Europe’s battery supply chain.

#REGMAX.CHLORIDE: Innovative Solution for Regenerating Spent Hydrochloric Pickling Acid in Stainless Steel Processing
The regeneration of hydrochloric acid in stainless steel pickling poses a major challenge due to the high concentration of ferric chloride (FeCl3), complicating conventional recovery methods. SUSTEC’s REGMAX.CHLORIDE technology offers an efficient solution, fully recovering hydrochloric acid while reducing environmental impact.

*Hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide in stainless steel pickling: Mechanisms
Stainless steel requires surface treatment to remove impurities formed during the manufacturing process. Pickling is a critical step that removes oxide scales, residues and contaminants, thereby restoring the corrosion-resistant properties of the material. Some stainless-steel manufacturers use hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a pre-pickling agent due to its effectiveness in dissolving oxide scale. When combined with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), pickling efficiency and surface quality are further enhanced. This article examines the mechanisms and benefits of using HCl and H₂O₂ in stainless steel pickling.

*The passivation of stainless steel with nitric acid is a highly effective process. An Overview
Passivation with nitric acid is crucial in stainless steel production. It enhances corrosion resistance by forming a protective chromium oxide layer. The traditional disposal of used nitric acid presents environmental challenges due to the generation of nitrates in wastewater and toxic sludge containing heavy metals. SUSTEC's innovative solution addresses these issues head on by recovering and recycling the used passivation acid. This advancement not only reduces environmental pollution but also promotes sustainable practices within the stainless-steel industry. By balancing industrial needs with ecological responsibility, we can ensure the reliability and durability of stainless-steel components while protecting environmental health.
